Resveratrol is a substance (we have a whole section on resveratrol reviews) that is primarily found in the skin of red grapes and was first studied intensely when researchers noticed that people in France had a much lower rate of heart disease than people in other countries. French people typically eat a fairly high fat diet but also include a glass of wine or two with dinner. Scientists determined that the resveratrol found in the wine was not only lowering their risk of heart disease but also helped them live longer, look younger, weigh less, and have a lower rate of developing cancer.

It’s hard to believe that such a common part of red wine has been overlooked for such a long time. Especially when it offers so many amazing benefits to your health. The primary ways that resveratrol effects the body is through antioxidants but it also works to protect your nervous system and thins the blood slightly which takes a little stress off your heart muscles. The antioxidants help your body protect itself against free radicals that can damage the body in a multitude of ways. Pollution in the air contains free radicals which can attack your skin cells and enter through your lungs. This could lead to various types of cancer and premature aging. If you eat foods that contain a lot of chemicals or have been heavily processed, these free radicals can contribute to the development of cancers and tumors in the stomach and intestines.

Some studies have also found that if you combine a diet rich in resveratrol, either through red wine or supplements, you have a chance to live longer and won’t be at a high risk to develop Alzheimer’s disease later in life. Human trials haven’t been conducted just yet in regards to the lifespan claim because people live to an average of 68-75 years old and it will take time to get sufficient data but in smaller organisms it seems to have significantly increased the average lifespan.

You can get the benefits of resveratrol simply by drinking glass of red wine with dinner but if you are looking for something that gives you a higher concentration without having to drink, supplements are probably the way to go.
