What is Resveratrol?

You might have noticed that over the past few years a lot of dietary supplements and anti-aging products are telling you they have a large amount of resveratrol in them. This substance has also been featured on many common news programs and talk shows around the world. Resveratrol is a naturally occurring substance that is primarily in the skins of red grapes and a plant called Japanese knotwort. It’s also found in some other foods and plants such as peanuts and eucalyptus leaves but the concentration isn’t very high.

Resveratrol has been studied intensely for the past 10 years or so and scientists have found it to have some amazing properties. Some of these include: Extending your natural lifespan, helping prevent cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, preventing premature aging, and even helping people lose weight. This sounds too good to be true but various institutions around the world agree that resveratrol is an amazing substance that all people should include in their diet. The easiest way to do this is to drink a glass or two of red wine each day or take supplements.

One of the reasons resveratrol is able to help your body in so many ways is because it is very high in antioxidants. Antioxidants help your body fight off free radicals which are harmful atoms or molecules that can damage cells and have been linked to everything from wrinkles to cancer and are most common in pollution and chemicals in food and water. Antioxidant rich foods help protect your body from the inside out so the effects of free radicals are significantly lowered.

While red wine is still one of the most common ways to get a good daily dose of resveratrol, many manufacturers have begun selling supplements that give you a much more potent and effective way to get the same benefits. Some of these supplements contain so much resveratrol that to equal them, you’d need to drink 2-3 bottles of red wine. While that is good antioxidant wise, it opens up a whole new can of worms. Including being entirely too drunk to really do much else at all!
